The Coming of Winter. December 5, 2024 08:05

Last press cake from this vintage is done.
It was a birthday party for the 2024 vintage.

New wines are tucked into their barrels.

I'm now watching the vineyards advance into winter mode.

Vines look ragged as they drop their green summer cloaks.
Almost like they are falling apart and dying. But they aren't.
They are just taking a break.

The bare, naked structure of each grapevine is being revealed
so I can see and take care of them.

A carpet of young green grass softens and transforms the dusty vineyard floor.

Fall rains have washed and revealed smooth rocks.
I like rocks.

Soon a cover crop bouquet of legumes and grasses will fill the rows.

I am anxious to start pruning.
I love the meditation of pruning.
Soon I will be pruning again.

Winter also means hearty meals..

     ... and delicious red wines.
