(Library) VIOGNIER 2021 Estate Gannon Vyd, Dry Creek Valley
Light straw color. Tangy crisp citrus and sea water minerality. Pome fruit, pineapple, apricot, almond marzipan, grape, hazelnut, green papaya, kiwi, key lime and vanilla. Dry lingering, full mouth feel. Sur lie aged.
The Grape: Viognier is a delicate vine that is a shy producer for me. The fruit is small clustered with small, thin skinned transluscent berries.
The Vineyard: Frick's Estate Gannon Vineyard, on the south facing slope near the winery is good dirt for viognier. I planted this tiny vineyard in 1988 on decomposed Dry Creek Conglomerate soil. The vines have very low vigor. the grapes produced are full of classic viognier character. Production is always limited. This drought year of 2021 produced only 59 cases.
The Wine: Fermented and aged in small stainless steel barrels. Extended sur lie aging lent added complexity and intrigue. 100% low yield Estate Viognier grapes. Drink now to 2026. 59 cases made.
