(Library) SYRAH 2020 Estate Owl Hill Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

$ 57.00

Tasting NotesDark Cherry, black currant, cassis, dried ripe strawberry, meat drippings, licorice, thyme, vanilla, black tea, white pepper, tar. Lingering dry finish. Elegant inviting Syrah.

The Grape: Noble Syrah originally from Rhone River Valley in France. Very dark in color; one the darkest. Ripens mid season. Freshly crushed fruit displays floral bouquet fragrance that carries on into the wine. The vine can be vigorous so it benefits from growing on the rocky hillsides here at Frick.

The Vineyard: I planted Frick Estate Owl Hill Vineyard with syrah in 1988. The soil on this small hillside is rocks, gravel, sand and clay from decomposed Dry Creek Conglomerate. The make up of this soil stresses the vines to reduce vigor and produce a small crop with distinctive classic syrah characteristics.

The Wine: Syrah is my pet. The first Rhone red I planted. Full and balanced with black fruits, earthy and meaty with dry tannin finish. Enjoyable now for its fresh fruit youthful character. Should also age well.  Drink now to 2030. Only 122 cases made.

Serve with: big juicy grilled portobello mushroom, prime rib eye steak, venison, short ribs of beef, triple crème brie with walnuts and raisins, black bean chili, Butternut squash, pork tenderoin, smoked brisket, chile macaroni
