(Library) MOURVÈDRE 2021 Estate Owl Hill Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

$ 58.00

Tasting Notes:  Raspberry, red cherry, red currant, fig, earthy dry leaves, sourdough toast , black olive, mushroom, bay leaf, thyme, and tea.

The Grape: Mourvèdre (moe-vehd) is a classic Rhône grape that produces nice medium to full bodied wines that are often used in blends. Late to bud and late to ripen this is often close to the last that I harvest.

The Vineyard:  Frick's Estate Owl Hill Vineyard, on the southeast-facing hillsides near the winery.  This tiny vineyard is composed of rock, gravel and clay from decomposed Dry Creek Conglomerate soil.  In this soil the vines have low vigor and produce limited amounts of grapes with distinctive, full, rich and classic varietal character. This block of the vineyard abuts the tasting room.

The Wine: 100% Estate Mourvèdre grapes. Classic character with restrained fruit with savory meatiness.  Drink now to 2030.  Only 72 cases produced.

Serve with:  celery root soup, grilled chicken with wild rice, polenta sticks, dal (lentil soup), duck breast on spinach, potato vindaloo, grilled cumin spiced eggplant with couscous, mesquite charred lamb, barbecued beef short ribs, sautéed shiitake and portobello mushrooms, roast rabbit, dishes spiced with soy sauce or black pepper.
